summer sketchbook work

For the most part my sketchbooks was full of doodles from my imagination, though I started to reference photographs in the hopes of gaining a better understanding of the human figure. I want to have the ability to not just draw stubby cute things!

And a few mini comics, with little focus on interesting imagery or visual narrative, just drawn straight from the mind

...and drawing cars by memory at 2am. they might have some charm, I'm not sure.

I found markers a useful tool for sketchbooks, as they're quick and easy to use but also add some colour and opportunities for shape.

mostly I find I naturally just doodle characters

and also drew from real life experience, i.e. after going to my first football match in about a decade. I like the little footballer drawings, they have little technical value but I think they're fun.

the only project I started to pursue with a cohesive theme was the animal band pun project, mostly as a lighthearted escape from the Author/ Murakami project.

I used oil pastels for the first time too. On a small scale it's hard to get anything refined but embracing this and just having fun and doodling was cathartic. The roughness almost encouraged wilder and more interesting ideas. Again, like markers, it's an easy way to work and plan with colour in a sketchbook.

Mel showed me how to use the pastels as an almost print method (above left). It gives an interesting effect but so far I've found it difficult to give it a distinguished look.
